The Finance Conversation: Why Timing Matters When Working With Growers

finance-conversations-with-retailers

Retailer conversations with growers typically focus on agronomics: what to plant, what to apply, and when. Financing gets far less attention, even though it’s just as much on the grower’s mind.

Growers aren’t only deciding what they need this season. They’re also working out how they’ll pay for it.

Raising the financing conversation early, rather than waiting until the order is being placed, makes the season more manageable for both the grower and the retailer.

Growers Want to Know Their Options

When a grower sits down with a retailer to plan the season, they aren’t only asking, “What do I need?”

They’re also thinking, “How am I going to pay for it?”

That doesn’t mean every grower has the same financial needs or preferences. Acreage, crops, cash flow, timing, existing relationships and individual financial goals all play a role in what makes sense for a particular grower.

Some growers may already have a financing plan in place. Others may want to explore different options. Some may be comfortable talking about numbers, while others may be more hesitant.

Meet the grower where they are.

That’s why the finance conversation shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all discussion.

A strong retailer relationship is built on understanding the individual operation: not just its acres or its crop mix, but the grower’s goals, concerns and priorities.

The goal is to make sure growers understand all of the options available to them and have the information they need to make the decision that’s right for their operation.

Make It a Conversation, Not an Afterthought

Finance doesn’t have to be a separate or uncomfortable conversation.

It’s a natural part of the planning process.

As you’re sitting down with a grower to discuss their crop plan, ask questions such as:

  • How are you thinking about paying for your inputs this season?
  • Have you considered your financing options yet?
  • Is there anything about your financing plan you’re unsure about?
  • Would it be helpful to walk through the options available to you?

These simple questions open the door.

And once that door is open, listen.

The goal is to understand what the grower needs and help them navigate their options, not just present a financing solution.

You Don’t Have to Have Every Answer

Finance can be complicated, and retailers aren’t expected to know the answer to every question a grower might ask.

If you don’t know the answer, say so, then follow up once you do.

Get the right information, connect the grower with the appropriate resource and close the loop. That follow-through matters more than guessing.

Start the Conversation Early

Perhaps the most important part of the finance conversation is when you have it.

Don’t wait until the grower is ready to place the order.

By then, the conversation may already be focused on seed varieties, chemical programs, fertilizer rates and other agronomic decisions. Adding financing to that conversation at the last minute creates unnecessary stress and distraction.

Instead, start early.

Ideally, financing should be discussed and addressed as part of the initial planning process. That way, when it is time to place the order for seed, crop protection products or fertilizer, the financial side has already been considered.

The grower focuses on the agronomic plan, the retailer focuses on meeting it, and everyone moves forward with more clarity.

Address Financing Early to Strengthen the Relationship

Having the finance conversation early isn’t about checking another box.

It’s about creating a better experience for the grower.

When financing is addressed early and the grower understands their options, the rest of the season is about what really matters: the crop, the operation and the relationship.

That means more time for agronomic conversations. More time in the field. More opportunities to identify challenges and opportunities. And more time to build the kind of relationship that lasts beyond a single growing season.

The finance conversation shouldn’t get in the way of the relationship. Handled early and thoughtfully, it strengthens it instead.

So the next time you’re sitting down with a grower to plan the season, don’t wait for them to bring up financing.

Start the conversation.

Listen to what they need.

Help them understand their options.

And if you don’t know the answer, commit to finding it.

Settle the financing early, and it becomes another way you strengthen the relationship with the grower.
